Buns

Back in Hong Kong and fresh off the trip from Vietnam, me and a couple of friends decided to go over to the nearby island of Cheung Chau to attend the annual Bun Festival. We caught a ferry over and a hour later, we arrived at the small island which is 10km southwest of Hong Kong Island.

Don't ask me what this sign says. But I was quite impressed by how many people there were on the island. Even though we went later in the afternoon, there were tons of people. It was even crazier when we tried to leave. The line for the ferry back to HK must've been at least 1/2 mile long and took us an hour just to get to the front.

Lots of booths were selling bun festival paraphernalia.

Even had a lion dance going on.

One of the main highlights of the festival is the bun-snatching competition. These three "Bun Mountains" or"Bun Towers" are 60 feet tall and covered with buns. People climb up and try to grab as many buns as they can.

The new main Bun Tower, and definitely the biggest one.

It only seems right that since we went to a bun festival, we should get some buns. Says pingan(平安) on the top of the bun.

Also located on the island was Cheung Po Tsai Cave, the alleged hiding place of the famous 19th century pirate, Cheung Po Tsai.

The entrance to the cave was quite small, I would advise any rotund people against trying to go through the cave.

It was really dark down there and very tight. I don't know how anyone, even a famous pirate, survived down there.

The exit, just as small and cramped as the entrance. The cave wasn't that long, only took us a couple of minutes to walk through.
